Character Info
◎ Character's Name: Tahiri Veila
◎ Character's Canon: Star Wars Legends
◎ Character's Age: 15
◎ Canon Point: End of Star By Star.
◎ Background/History: Wiki.
◎ Is the character a hacker and/or do they have a sixth-sense? If Jedi powers count as a sixth-sense, yes.
◎ Personality:
The first thing anyone will notice about Tahiri Veila (past her blonde hair, green eyes, and bare feet) is that she enjoys talking. As a child on Tatooine with the quiet and stoic Tusken Raiders Tahiri didn't have anyone to talk to. Even after learning their language she was something of an outcast among them, as she had been brought into the fold by their chieftain against the will of the majority of the clan. So once she was brought to the Jedi Academy by the Jedi teacher Tionne Tahiri basically made up for lost time by talking a lot. In her early days at the academy she notes that she made a point of speaking to all of her fellow classmates. On multiple occasions Tahiri talks so much that other characters just wait for her to finish so they can actually respond (mostly Anakin, who takes the brunt of most of her chatter). Once she even talks and asks so many questions of a villain that she stuns him - and everyone else - into silence. Tahiri is endlessly interested in everything going on around her, and never fails to have questions about all of it. The only times she is shown to be silent are later on in canon, as she deals with the after effects of her torture and shaping at the hands of the Yuuzhan Vong. Even her reaction to Anakin's death is to talk-- to his body, ceaselessly and half lucid.
As Tahiri's adoptive father has said, "some things never change", in reference to Tahiri's stubbornness. Once she has her mind set on something, that is it. When she was first brought to the Jedi Academy, she decided to not wear shoes, and now some five or six years later, she still won't wear shoes unless she absolutely has to. Whenever someone tries to leave her out of something she thinks she should be a part of, she absolutely refuses to keep out of it and follows along of her own accord. While she does listen to certain people in certain situations, Tahiri won't do anything she absolutely disagrees with - except at the behest of a very select few people. Though she has no desire to leave Anakin behind in Star by Star, she leaves when he urges her to do so and after making him promise he'll catch up later. Tahiri is a determined, stubborn young girl for a reason. She was raised on Tatooine with the Sand People known as the Tusken Raiders, and one of the things they're known for is surviving. In the book Promises, Anakin notes something he read about the Sand People-- "Survival was the rule. Survival at all costs." This is something Tahiri exhibits often, and even more so after her shaping.
If she was from the Harry Potter series, Tahiri would be a Gryffindor. Reckless does not quite cover the extent of her bravery and headstrong nature. Tahiri is the sort of person who will run headlong into danger despite all common sense. Whether it's pressing a random button she finds without thinking, or rushing into danger while disregarding the consequences-- even after she's captured and tortured Tahiri still seems to have not learned her lesson about this-- Tahiri has an impulsive nature and lacks forethought. She leaves the thinking and planning to Anakin, though she frequently disregards his thoughts if they don't align with what Tahiri feels she should do, generally if he asks her to stay behind (she listens to him all of once on this count, and considering what happened after this, she probably won't be listening to him about it ever again). Being told what to do is something Tahiri has never been particularly good at accepting unless it aligns with anything she wants to do. Sure, she'll listen to authority figures usually, but there are a lot of times where she decides nah, she'll just do her own thing. Even if her own thing is a bad idea and poorly planned. That said, she does tend to listen to certain people she trusts almost unthinkingly at times - she's willing to hand over her lightsaber to Anakin without a second thought or any question when he asks for it, for example.
Tahiri has a kind heart. She's the sort of person that will rush to rescue someone when she hears they're in trouble (without much thought or hesitation, of course). This goes for friends and for strangers (Jedi or no) that she senses with the force or sees with her own two eyes. In the book Lyric's World she's more than willing to go to her new friend Lyric's planet and help her on an arduous journey to safe waters through many monsters despite having only known the girl for maybe a day, and later in the series she's happy to assist stowaway Uldir after meeting him-- well, stowing away. Even when Uldir betrays Tahiri and Anakin and runs off with some priceless artifacts, Tahiri's first concern is how she failed Uldir to the point he would feel he had to do that-- she wonders how she could have been a better friend to him to prevent that occurring. In more recent times, such as in Edge of Victory I, she jumps off of a ship into a fray of Yuuzhan Vong to go after the Jedi Master Ikrit-- the latter is what led to her capture in that book, but even after that she clearly hasn't learned her lesson and in the next book while she and Anakin are supposed to stay with the supply ship she runs off to help a Jedi they sense is under attack. Tahiri is also able to understand that Anakin doesn't really want to talk about Centerpoint Station or Chewbacca's death, despite her usually inquisitive and insistent nature. While she's fiery and headstrong, she also genuinely likes other people and is typically fairly friendly in most circumstances and always willing to lend a hand.
When she was 14, Tahiri was captured by the Yuuzhan Vong, who tried to reshape her into one of them via painful torturing. The Yuuzhan Vong are an alien race who invaded the Star Wars galaxy in the arc that Tahiri is taken from; they use biotech and abhor machinery, and are dedicated to pain and death. Physically, all they did was give her a mark on her forehead, but mentally they attempted to implant a false identity in her and even their language. The false identity that was implanted in her was named Riina Kwaad, who was based on the memories of Nen Yim. That identity still exists in Tahiri, and has at times surfaced - once when Anakin was getting hit by some cops, her more violent Yuuzhan Vong persona came to the forefront with a war cry. So there exists in her a persona that hates machines and reveres pain. I note this because there is a point in future canon where this part of her does try to take over due to her grief from Anakin's death (Tahiri manages to unify the two halves while remaining the dominant personality), but she is currently in control of the second personality and remains the "dominant" personality-- although it being there is also obviously worth noting. The fact that the Yuuzhan Vong did this to her isn't exactly something she can forget, particularly since she can still feel part of it there below the surface and even uses Yuuzhan Vong battle cries on occasion-- and even more so when she sometimes finds herself thinking in their language.
Jedi are supposed to have endless patience, and while Tahiri can be patient, she has a fiery soul and a free spirit. She absolutely does not take anyone's shit, especially if it's someone speaking poorly about Anakin Solo (unless it's her trash talking him, since she's apparently the only one allowed) or another friend. And goodness forbid if you suggest that Tahiri is too young for something, as that is a 100% surefire way to earn her ire and make her do the thing she shouldn't do. There are a few things Tahiri has no tolerance for-- being considered young, being left behind (by Anakin), anyone talking shit about Anakin, and wearing shoes when she doesn't absolutely have to. Tahiri doesn't take things quietly, either-- when she's had enough, she will say so and she will say so loudly. And at length. It's also worth noting that Tahiri has very little patience for girls paying attention to Anakin at this canon point. She gets jealous even if she doesn't specifically say anything about it, and tends to cling a little and not get along with the other Jedi girls their age. Still, it's not to the point where she lets it get in the way of what she has to do (even if she complains about having to help a girl who had been cozying up to Anakin all throughout Star by Star) or to the point she ever actually mentions it to Anakin. But it's to the point where other people notice it and comment on it.
Tahiri's parents died when she was very young, and she was taken in by a Tusken Raider named Silven. For many years, Tahiri knew nothing of her birth parents besides the pendant Silven gave her of their thumbprints. Tahiri wouldn't learn this until she was nine, but the Tusken Raiders had attacked and killed her parents when they saw Silven practice sparring with her father. Silven found baby Tahiri crying. Their reaction? Leave her to die, as she was an outsider. Silven made a deal with his people that he would not tell Tahiri of her origins and that at the age of nine (when the sand people consider their children adults) she would be left out in the desert to find her way back to the tribe, or Silven would die and be replaced as leader. So yeah, these are the people that raised this girl until she was nine. Even though she did choose to return to the Jedi Academy after crossing that desert (and fighting a dragon), she still considers Silven a second father of hers and has a second pendant with his thumbprint. She specifically asked him to add his thumbprint to the pendant as a symbol of that, and keeps it with her still.
Just as important than Tahiri's family (or lack thereof) is Anakin Solo, the boy who became her best friend when he was 11 and she was 9. Arguably her first real friend besides Tahiri's pet bantha, Anakin and Tahiri were the best of friends right up until Anakin's very recent death-- beginning to become more than friends, actually, though they never got the chance to really discuss it. There's no one who knows Tahiri better, and no one she knows better. Her affection for Anakin is deep enough that years after his death she's swayed to the dark side due to her grief and regret over his passing, and with the enticement of seeing him in the past thanks to a force-walking ability Jacen Solo had - more than that, Anakin simply telling her she was his best friend and that he loved her was enough for her to overcome the Riina Kwaad persona as she held a lightsaber to his face, just after her shaping and torture at the hands of the Yuuzhan Vong. His being alive and well in Cerealia will play a part in keeping that half of her in check.
◎ Powers/Abilities:
Tahiri is a Jedi Knight (though technically still considered in training, to a point), and is thus able to use The Force. The Force is a flexible, versatile force (har har) that can be used in many different ways. In simple terms, she is a space wizard. The Force can be used in a lot of ways. Tahiri is specifically a light side Force-user (at her current canon point, anyway...). I'll try to organize this and provide examples of at least most of the things Tahiri is known to be able to do. It should be noted that while Tahiri is a skilled Jedi by herself, she's more skilled when in combinination with Anakin Solo(who has a more detailed power section I note).
► TELEKINESIS► Lifting and moving objects. Size matters not, but it does take energy and effort. "Throwing junk at enemies" seems to be a popular Jedi tactic, or at least one her and Anakin frequently utilize.
► Force-assisted acrobatics, which include slowing descent and having more accurate aim when, say, somersaulting around. It's said that during their academy days, she and Anakin made a game out of jumping off high things and making sure the other didn't fall. This also assists in making higher jumps and things.
► FORCE SENSE / TELEPATHIC MUMBO JUMBO► Tahiri can sense force-sensitive people, particularly Jedi. It works better with people she knows well, being able to sense where they are and the like.
► The ever famous "Jedi Mind Trick", which is mostly used to get through security checkpoints and the like without being questioned or convincing people of things.
► Along with sensing those who are force-sensitive, with those that she is more strongly connected to she can feel when they are in pain, and with Anakin they can even use some lowgrade telepathy-- not enough for words, but for feelings and the like mostly.
► She can also sense others' feelings (in the vein of "I sense anger/[whatever] in you").
► She can sense disturbances in the Force (which is very Jedi-like) - if something bad occurs to someone force-sensitive nearby, or if something big bad or good happens (like a planet exploding, though that's obviously bad) she'll get a mental memo.
► Battle-wise, her Jedi danger sense allows her to sense what moves the enemy will make seconds before they do it, reacting supernaturally fast to onslaughts.
► PRECOGNITION► Jedi have a sort of "bad vibe" precognition. In example, Tahiri had a recurring dream as a child of rafting on a river and falling in-- despite never having seen a river before. This comes to pass during the first book she appears in.
► Said danger sense from above will usually let her know when traps/enemies are around so she can avoid them. In the often-said words of many a Star Wars character: "I've got a bad feeling about this..."
► OTHER► She also has the stock Jedi ability to put herself in a healing trance or coma. This takes 100% focus, though, and she can't do anything else at the time. Tahiri's not a dedicated healer, but she can do all right with minor wounds.
► She can boost her stamina and abilities with the Force and dampen her senses as well (slowing her breathing or stopping herself from making any noise) - although a Jedi can't run on the Force indefinitely (cough cough ANAKIN).
Those are just her Jedi-related powers, her other powers include;► Like Anakin, Tahiri has Vongsense, however she hasn't trained it but it is something that she could do.
► Because of the attempt to reshape her into a Yuuzhan Vong, she can understand their language and has even said she sometimes thinks in it, which also means she can use Vong biotechnology (or at least fly their ships-- though she is not much of a pilot). This also has left her with a potentially higher tolerance for pain.
► As she was raised by the Tusken Raiders on the harsh desert planet of Tatooine, Tahiri has survival skills and knows how to track/etc in the desert.
► Can use a lightsaber, like all trained Jedi. She's still in training, sort of, so she's hardly a master with it but she hasn't cut off anything off anyone on accident, so that's a plus. On purpose, however, she can sure as heck decapitate a Yuuzhan Vong.
► Can also use a blaster, a more modern Jedi weapon to go along with the lightsaber.
◎ Weapons & Other Special Inventory:
► Pendant necklace (there are two pendants; one has the thumbprints of her parents, the other has the thumb-print of the Tusken Raider who raised her)
► Lightsaber (hers is blue).
► Wrist-comm.
► Multitool.
► Blaster.
